Teleport 4.4 is here! The major innovation we’re introducing in this version is much improved control over interactive sessions for SSH and Kubernetes protocols. We’ll do a deeper dive into session control later, but for those who aren’t familiar with it, Teleport is an open source project. It provides access to SSH servers and Kubernetes clusters on any infrastructure, on any cloud, or any IoT device, anywhere, even behind NAT. Teleport is an alternative to OpenSSH with support for additional protocols like Kubernetes.

How Teleport Works is a good introduction.

What is an SSH Session?

Every time a user types ssh [email protected], a connection is established between the user’s machine (a client) and the target host. In Teleport, this connection is never direct. Teleport does not expose hosts to the Internet by default, so every connection is transparently established via a proxy.

A user may execute a remote command, or a sequence of commands, and be waiting for their completion. A user may execute a remote shell or any interactive terminal application. For this to work, the context of the connection needs to be maintained. The state of the information exchange that takes place over this connection is called a session. Teleport provides useful metadata for each session and stores it in the audit log:

When a user types kubectl exec pod-name command something similar happens, but uses the Kubernetes protocol instead of SSH.

What is a Session Control?

We don’t want any team member to have SSH access to any server or any Kubernetes environment. Role-based access control (RBAC) allows us to configure that. Session control is different.

Session control allows us to apply restrictions on sessions that are allowed. In practice, some restrictions are not only obvious and useful, they are required to achieve FedRAMP compliance. Such restrictions supported by Teleport 4.4 include:

Session control is useful as it allows to prevent an accidental or intentional DDOS attack on a valuable SSH endpoint by a single misbehaving client.

Idle Sessions

WIth the recent switch to working from home, we are no longer surrounded by the safe environment of a company’s office. We work from home, but sometimes from a park or even in an outside cafe. What happens then, when an engineer establishes a connection to a node, gets distracted, and steps away from their machine?

Hopefully they have configured their desktop environment to self-lock after a short amount of time, so a stranger couldn’t have unauthorized access.

It is much better not having to rely on this. Teleport 4.4 automatically terminates idle connections after a configurable amount of time. We recommend that it be set to 15 minutes because this is sufficient for FedRAMP and PCI compliance.

Automatic Session Termination

Suppose an employee reports that their laptop just got stolen. Or perhaps an employee moves to a different group within an organization, or even changes jobs.

The best practice in this scenario is to ensure that no active sessions exist anywhere on any environment of this user’s. Teleport 4.4 does not provide this functionally just yet, but in this version, we have laid down the technical foundation to launch this capability very soon.

Session Sharing

Unlike legacy SSH servers, Teleport offers two unique capabilities regarding session management:

Session Sharing is a powerful tool but isn’t always wanted. Teleport provides RBAC with fine grained controls to limit who can join or view recorded sessions. This lets companies set up dedicated accounts for auditors, that can only review Teleport Activity but not join or create any sessions.


This release contains a healthy dose of usability and performance improvements. One of them was to improve session streaming i.e. how the session data gets from a host to the audit log. Not only did we make it more scalable, we also made it fit the constraint of compliance standards such as FedRAMP.
